Pedal Less, sea more!!
welcome to barrier Island Bikes where you can Put all your senses to the test!
Barrier Island Bikes is proudly local to Beaufort and its Islands. And we are passionate about preservation of while still sharing the natural beauty, rich history, culture and laid-back lifestyle of the South Carolina coast.
We created Barrier Island Bikes to help visitors and locals experience the islands in a more memorable and immersive way. Our electric beach bikes combine comfort, performance, and convenience—making it easy for riders of all experience levels to enjoy scenic coastal adventures without the stress of traffic or parking. Barrier Island Bikes is a small, family owned e-bike rental company. Barrier Island Bikes is all about the environment, the preservation and protection of our beautiful low country and its barrier islands. E-bikes are eco-friendly, compact, and as allowed can go places where vehicles and golf carts can't... or just wont fit. They have become a new way of eco-tourism. We want to be your premier local e-bike rental connection. We don't just provide a set of wheels, we deliver an open invitation to experience a small part the South Carolina Lowcountry at your pace. You may even meet many of our cultural family as you travel, possibly hearing stories or witness a skill or art passed down through many generations.
Barrier Island Bikes allows you a chance to awaken all your senses. Our rentals can be delivered to Dataw, Harbor, Hunting Island State Park or Fripp Island. Renting an e-bike isn't just about moving from point A to point B. It is about fully immersing yourself in a multi sensory experience along the way that regular bikes just cannot match. Use your bike to experience that 5 sense adventure as you traverse to the very end of Seaside Parkway. This immersion provides pure coastal therapy.

Let the crisp salty scent of the beach, the ever hanging Spanish Moss and maritime forests set the tone as you island hop. Watch the local shrimp boats come in to offload at the docks only to head back out making pass after pass offshore again. See coastal wildlife and non-stop surrounding estuary life up close. Always be on the lookout for many of our numerous feathered friends while birding from your bike. Many remain all year, but many are just passing through. Hopefully even see a Painted Bunting passing through or White Pelicans flying over in groups of 20 plus one behind each other or resting out on the sand bars waiting on the next feeding opportunity. Our islands accommodate these and many others as migration patterns and seasons change.
May through August is a great time to possibly see a mother Loggerhead Turtle heading to or from her nesting spot in the sand dunes late evening or early morning. Exhausted from digging and laying her valuable eggs, she quickly covers them up and slowly makes her way back down to the ocean as her job is done! Or even better, happen to witness the magical moment 55-65 days later when a nest "boils" over. Dozens of baby Loggerhead Turtles emerge from the nest and make a feverish scramble to the surf line peaking from July through October. Remember lights out from May through October as Mother and hatchlings both instintively use the reflection of the moon and stars to guide them. And definitely don't disturb them in any way as they are Federally protected and fines can be extreme.
Hopefully you will see numerous deer on each trip carefully camouflaged against the coastal vegetation. Even though they may seem fearless and come close, please don't touch or feed them as it is against the law.
Feel that transition from bike to beach under you feet after you park and spend the afternoon swimming or looking for those few special seashells. Or maybe even sharks teeth thousands of years old.
When near the water ways, be sure to listen to the unmistakable sound of a Dolphins exhaling as they come up for air. Or the chirping of a family of Osprey or Bald Eagles hunting overhead for their next meal to dive down on. Laughing Gulls can also always be heard alerting others to food usually keeping close watch for the many shrimp boats coming and going with the tide.
Finally, make sure you generate a healthy appetite with just enough peddling for some local seafood at one of our local restaurants. Stop in for a bucket of fresh oysters or a basket of fried shrimp!
Each rental from Barrier Island Bikes always exposes something new to experience for every sense!
